What is the Difference Between Page Template and Page Layout?

Although a Page Template and a Page Layout might sound like a the same thing, they serve a very different purpose. 

A Page Template defines the main layout of your page, including essential details like navigation and the footer. Depending on your needs, you can have various page templates, one for the main site, one for the candidate portal and another for the careers site. Page templates save you time when creating new pages as some aspects will be ready to re-use site-wide and will not need populating each time you build a new page. 

A Page Layout is responsible for everything else in between the navigation bar and the footer. The layout can be blank, which gives you free rein over which modules you choose and where you put them, or you can create custom layouts that can be re-used. For example, you can have a page layout set up for login pages or thank you pages where all you need to do is add an extra module or two instead of building the full page from scratch.
